The Economic Impact of Nonprofit Arts and Cultural Organizations and Their Audiences in Pinellas County

The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance 2017 Arts Summit presented with Creative Pinellas, Clearwater Arts Alliance, North Pinellas Cultural Alliance and the Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts was filled to capacity.  The real measure of success though was Pinellas County, as keynote speaker Randy Cohen from American’s for the Arts illustrated the benefits of the economic impact of the arts.

The Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 study provides compelling evidence that the nonprofit arts and culture sector is a major economic force in Pinellas County

  • $241 million industry
  • 7,211 full-time equivalent jobs
  • Generates $11,621,000 in local government revenue
  • Generates $18,130,000 in state government revenue
  • Average spending per person in addition to cost of event is $33.02
  • Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations, which spent $100.2 million during 2015, leveraged a remarkable $140.8 million in additional spending by their audiences—spending that pumped vital revenue into restaurants, hotels, retail stores, parking garages, and other local businesses.

The City of St. Petersburg has begun distribution of 35,000 copies of a carefully curated Art Collectors Guide, targeting art collectors and buyers in Florida and around the U.S.

The guide aims to market St. Pete, not just as a City with a strong arts community, but as a place for collectors to add to or begin their collections.

Highlights from the 2015 Arts & Culture Economic Impact Report


These non-profit organizations self-reported attracting 5,167,494 visitors in 2014, and generated total revenues of $38,270,987

  • Our analysis shows that 32% of these visitors came from outside the St. Petersburg area
  • The 32 organizations earned revenue total was approximately $38,270,987.20
  • Direct spending was $32,248,513.30
  • Indirect spending based on admissions was $180,277,327 for a total economic impact of $212,525,840.
  • Local government revenue estimate was over 6M; state government revenue estimate was over $9M
  • These 32 organizations were responsible for 822 jobs (185 full time, 637 part time)
